fulcrumpoint 20 years forging new art music
by Annette Dixon
Recently Stephen Burns Artistic Director introduced Markus Stockhausen, one of the most versatile musicians of our time to
various students from neighboring schools. It was a beautiful day for progressive jazz in a classroom surrounding.
My favorite bass player was there from DePaul University, Mary Halm along with Aaron Burns, Sam Veren, both played trumpet from DePaul. Some of the other music students were from various schools such as Jazz Institute of Chicago, and Merit Music School. There was an impressive young 14 year old pianist named Devin Shaw, who was quite mature and a polished musician for such a young age. He will someday be our next new leader in all forms of music.
Second half of the show was Markus Stockhausen, trumpet and Florian Weber, Piano, they teamed up to present us with a real
treat, Inside Out! In 2015 this team released their “inside out” on the legendary ECM label inspired improvisation and intuitive musically united to become a harmonious entity at times. The day was
fulfilling with a great two hour session with fine musicians and a group of happy jazz recipients.
