time Grammy-winning soprano Renée Fleming, the multi-genre concert special features performances by Fleming, Tony-winner Jessie Mueller (Waitress,
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), Grammy-winning rapper Lupe Fiasco, three-time Grammy-winning folk legend John Prine, Grammy-winning pop and gospel singer Michelle Williams (Destiny’s Child), Grammy-winning jazz singer Kurt Elling and many more in a celebration of Chicago’s rich and diverse vocal music legacy.
Led by award-winning music director Doug Peck, the concert features additional performances and unique collaborations by Beverly Sills Award-winning tenor Matthew Polenzani, blues singer Shemekia Copeland, alternative country duo The Handsome Family, Voices of Trinity Mass Choir, Terrence Howard (Empire, Hustle & Flow) and Jussie Smollett (Empire). Civil rights activist and founder of Operation PUSH Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., as special guest presenter during the concert.

Led by guest conductor Valery Gergiev, the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic returns for its 15th open-air concert, with the Baroque gardens of Austria’s Imperial Schönbrunn Palace serving as the magnificent back-drop. The program features internationally acclaimed soprano Anna Netrebko as
special guest soloist and celebrates Italian operatic masters, with works by Rossini, Verdi and Puccini. Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert 2018 premieres nationwide on THIRTEEN’s
Great Performances Friday, August 17 at 10 p.m. on PBS

This summer night of Italian splendor begins with a stirring rendition of the finale to Rossini’s William Tell Overture and closes with “Wiener Blut,” the timeless Strauss waltz that demonstrates the Viennese spirit of love for their homeland. The telecast marks Valery Gergiev’s third time conducting the Summer Night Concert and his 150th
appearance with the orchestra. This free outdoor concert allows the distinguished orchestra to make classical music accessible beyond its usual core audience. The annual event is produced by the ORF, and transmitted live or delayed in more than 80 countries worldwide.

Since the release of his 2004 critically acclaimed CD “When I Fall in Love,” Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Chris Botti has become a top-selling American instrumental artist. Performing worldwide and selling more than four million
albums, Botti has found a form of creative expression that begins in jazz and expands beyond the limits of any single genre. With this new special, Great Performances puts the spot-light on Botti and his band, capturing one of today’s leading jazz trumpeters at his peak.

Performing well-known hits like “The Look of Love,” “The Very Thought of You,” “Cinema Paradiso” and “When I Fall in Love,” Botti is joined on stage by vocalists Sy Smith and Veronica Swift, violinist Caroline Campbell and organist Joey DeFrancesco, along with band members:pianist
Taylor Eigsti, guitarist Leonardo Amuedo, Reggie Hamilton on bass, keyboardist Rachel Eckroth and Lee Pearson on drums. Equally at home in all musical genres, Botti guides the audience through a seamless and unforget-table live concert experience.
