On September 8, 2018, Adler Planetarium honored Captain James A. Lovell, Jr. at the
Celestial Ball at the Women Board Gala
During the gala, the Adler Planetarium presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to Captain James A. Lovell, Jr. Before he helped bring the crew of Apollo 13 safely back to Earth, before the Gemini
missions, before there was even such a thing as an astronaut, Captain Lovell was a boy who loved rockets. In dedicating his life to space explorations, Captain Lovell has inspired countless young people to dream bigger and rise to every challenge they encounter. Captain Lovell gave an interview recently and mentioned he lives in Chicago and a longtime partner with Magellan Corp. and over the decades presented several items from his personal collection which is on display in the Adler’s Mission Moon Exhibit.
This Lifetime award was in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of NASA’s Apollo 8 mission and to celebrate his legacy and to thank him for his friendship with Adler Planetarium.
